Lammas/Lughnasadh is the Neo Pagan festival celebrating the beginning of the Harvest. It's the midway point between Summer Solstice and the autumn equinox.

Lughnasadh is one of the 4 Gaelic Seasonal Festivals along with Samhain, Imbolc and Beltane. 

Named from the Many Skilled God Lugh, early writings suggest that there were challenges of skill and athleticism as well as religious rites including the giving of the First Fruits. The first ear of corn collected was given as an offering to the Calieach to ensure a plentiful harvest for the Winter.

In modern Neo Paganism effigies of the Sun God or John Barley Corn are erected and slain as part of a recreation of an alleged ancient tradition of Slaying an effigy of a God or King to bless the Land and wake it up.
