In witchcraft, hoodoo, and ancient European folklore, Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis)—often called Graveyard Dust, All-Heal, or Vandal Root, is a deeply potent, paradoxical plant. It is primarily used for heavy grounding, powerful banishing, deep sleep magic, and fierce psychic defence.Because of its famously pungent, musky, and earthy odour (which smells strongly like old cheese or sweaty wool), it carries a heavy Saturnian weight. In historic witchcraft, it was used as a substitute for actual graveyard dirt in hexing, binding, or necromantic workings.
However, its other traditional name, "All-Heal," highlights its equally powerful ability to bring profound peace, quiet chaotic households, and heal fractured nerves.
